Road Bike Tire Test: Specialized Turbo RapidAir 2Bliss Ready

Contents and Test Summary

The S-Works Turbo RapidAir 2Bliss Ready is a tubeless road bike tire from Specialized made for all-round conditions (see our conclusion about the all-round part). The RapidAir is the tire that received the most votes from our members in October, which indicates that many people want to see how this tire performs in our tests. We want to thank all our members for subscribing, we’re very curious which tires will make it to the top of the list in the future.

The foundation of the RapidAir is a 120 TPI «RapidAir» tubeless-ready casing with an extra layer of puncture resistance material under the tread, which is quite a familiar recipe for an all-round road bike tire. The compound is Specialized’s in-house developed Gripton compound that is used on many of their high-performance tires. Our previous experience with the Gripton compound is Specialized’s Turbo Cotton (read our review) that was one of the fastest tires out there when we tested it back in 2016.

The special thing about this tire is the RapidAir technology that promises easy inflation which in most cases should be possible with just a floor pump. Our experience with the set up of tubeless tires is that the rim makes a huge difference in ease of inflation as some rims simply have been designed with tubeless (inflation) in mind.

On our standard test rim, which is easy to get the tires on the rim but can be a pain to get them inflated, getting the RapidAir onto the rim took average force but inflation was very easy. We also tried a simple floor pump and it inflated very easily even with the valve core in place. The RapidAir was a very pleasant tire to test as we’ve had tires on this rim that wouldn’t even inflate with the valve core removed, 10 bars of compressed air, and sealant all over the place

NOTE: As of 2021, we’ve improved the puncture resistance tests and now provide ‘Total Puncture Score’ as the main puncture resistance indicator.

Total Puncture Score: This score consists of Puncture Force Sharp Needle, Puncture Force Blunt Needle, and Total Tire Thickness. This value will give the best indication of real-life puncture resistance.

Puncture Force Sharp Needle: Pre-2021, this score was known as ‘Puncture Resistance’. On some tires with weakly bonded casing wires, the sharp needle can split the casing wires resulting in a lower score.

Puncture Force Blunt Needle: The Blunt needle has a flat tip and won’t split the casing wires. To puncture the tire, the blunt needle has to cut the casing wires.

Total Tire Thickness: The puncture force tests are static and test the force required to puncture the casing and anti-puncture layers. To convert from a static lab test value to a more dynamic puncture resistance score, the thickness is used to calculate the total puncture resistance.

Specialized Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready tyre

VERDICT:

At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don’t intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product’s function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Good scores are more common than bad, because fortunately good products are more common than bad.

There’s an increasing choice in tyres designed for mixing it up on and off-road as the gravel and adventure market grows, and this new Pathfinder Pro from Specialized is a fast-rolling tyre that is good for tackling rough roads and dry hardpack gravel trails.

With its smooth centre section surrounded by tightly packed diamond-shaped blocks, it’s obviously a good choice for lots of road riding.

When riding in a straight upright position, that smooth centre line is all that contacts the road, and as a result provides low rolling resistance, allowing you to zip along the road at a decent pace. It really feels little slower than a slick tyre of similar width.

Feel adventurous and want to get off the road and onto some gravel and dirt, and the remainder of the tyre provides good grip. The diamond-shaped tread combined with bigger and spaced out shoulder blocks gives you the capability to let fire into loose gravel or dirty corners, knowing the compound and blocks will find grip. You won’t be tackling any muddy bogs, it’s not quite that capable, but for gravelly surfaced tracks, canal towpaths and dry bridleways, it offers more grip than a slick tyre.

The tyre is constructed with a 120 TPI ‘Endurant’ casing intended to be rugged for dealing with off-road shenanigans, and a BlackBelt puncture protection layer minimises the risk of puncturing. The tread is made from the company’s own Gripton compound which strikes a good balance of rolling resistance and traction.

Specialized’s 2Bliss play on words indicates it’s a tubeless-ready tyre. So I fitted them to a suitable tubeless-ready rim which proved painless, and enjoyed many happy rides of tubeless bliss. I suffered no flats, leaks or burps during that time. I’ve experienced good results with various Specialized tubeless tyres over the years and these did not buck the trend.

For where I live at this time of year, this is a good tyre for 80 per cent road and 20 per cent off-road exploring. But for areas with more gravel roads to explore, that ratio leans closer to 50/50. I can see this being a very rapid choice for an event like Dirty Reiver, which models itself on the famous Dirty Kanzas, an event incidentally which this tyre has apparently racked up victories at.

Specialized offers the Pathfinder in a choice of 38 and 42mm widths in 700C size or an on-trend 650B x 47mm option for those liking the small wheel movement. At £42 RRP it’s reasonably priced. Not cheap, but you can easily pay a lot more for a similar tyre: the £73 Compass Switchback, for example.

Whether it’s the right one for you really comes down to the type of riding you’re doing and how much road and hardpack gravel you’re mixing together. It really excels on the road but there are better and more versatile do-everything tyres, like the Panaracer GravelKing SK which offers a bit more grip off the road. And there are better choices for really muddy conditions, but steer clear of the bogs and it’s a decent tyre.

Overall, I like these tyres and for a lot of people they will be well suited. There’s a lot of choice in this sector of the tyre market, you just need to decide what you want and need from yours.

Verdict

Fast on the road and hardpack and good cornering grip, with easy tubeless setup; not great in the slop though

Specialized says, «Born in the American Midwest, gravel riding is one of the fastest–growing styles of cycling. The sense of adventure, conquering new challenges, and simply experiencing a new style of riding are some of its big selling points, but doing so without the proper tires makes the difference between having fun and cursing and hollering on the side of the road. The Pathfinder delivers the versatility that these adventure-laden rides deserve»fast rolling, lots of grip, and a whole lot of fun.»

CX/Gravel Tire Test: Specialized Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready

Contents and Test Summary

The Specialized Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready is a tubeless-ready gravel bike tire made for a mix of asphalt and gravel roads. When looking at this tire, we see quite a remarkable tread pattern with a slick center tread, small closely spaced knobs between the center and edge of the tire, and larger and wider spaced knobs along the edge of the tire.

The Pathfinder Pro 2 Bliss Ready is an interesting tire to test as it’s our first test of an off-road tire with Specialized’s Gripton compound. We already know the Gripton compound from some of Specialized’s road bike tires, and we’ve found it to be a very fast compound. We’re not sure if the Gripton compound that’s on the Pathfinder Pro is the exact same compound as used on the fast road bike tires, but you can be sure that you get Specialized’s best compound.

When we take a look at the specifications of the Pathfinder Pro 2Bliss Ready, we see it’s made from a tubeless-ready 120 TPI casing with reinforced sidewalls and a BlackBelt anti-puncture strip under the center of the tread. Almost all gravel bike tires come with reinforced sidewalls, but we do not see an anti-puncture strip under the tread all that often.

It’s available in the 38-622 (700x38c), 42-622 (700x42c), and even wider 47-584 (650x47b) sizes which seem to be the most popular sizes for gravel bike tires at the moment.

We’ve tested the 42-622 version of the Pathfinder Pro. If you’re a regular visitor of our site, please be aware that we added support for gravel bike tires up to the 42-622 size. Gravel bike tires with a casing width between 39 and 42 mm now use even lower air pressures (50 psi, 42 psi, 33 psi, 25 psi).

Conclusion

The Specialized Pathfinder Pro rolls quite fast, and the tread offers great puncture resistance although that does come at the cost of quite a high weight. If you’re specifically looking for a gravel bike tire with a slick center tread, that offers good off-road cornering grip, and you don’t mind the weight, the Pathfinder Pro would be our number one choice.

We’re happy to see the Specialized Gripton compound performs well on off-road tires as well. Although we didn’t test many off-road tires with the Gripton compound yet, we’re confident all tires that use this compound will perform well on our tests.
